T19/T66 Armored Car

Le projet T19 est un projet concurrent du projet T18E1 qui débuta en janvier 1942. Le T19 étant plus prometteur, le T18E1 fut finalement abandonné. Deux prototypes furent commandés. Le premier qui n' était pas sans présenter certaines ressemblances avec le T18, fut jugé trop lourd et trop haut.

The T19 project is a competitor project of the project T18E1 which began in January 1942. T19 being more promising, the T18E1 was finally abandoned. Two prototypes were ordered. The first which was not without presenting certain resemblances to T18, was considered to be too heavy and too high.

Le second prototype était équipé d' une tourelle plus petite et son poids était plus raisonnable. Ce modèle fut finalement baptisé T19E1. Le T19E1 comme le T19 était armé du canon de 37 mm. Le canon de 37 mm M6 avait une longueur de 56 calibres et une vitesse initiale variant entre 776 et 884 m/s. Le canon de 37 mm pouvait transpercer 48 mm de blindage sous 30° à 500 m. Le bloc de culasse du M6 était semi-automatique.

The second prototype was equipped with a smaller turret and its weight was more reasonable. This model was finally baptized T19E1. The T19E1 as T19 was armed with the gun of 37 mm. The gun of 37 mm M6 had a length of 56 calibers and an initial speed varying between 776 and 884 m/s. The gun of 37 mm could transpierce 48 mm of shielding under 30° to 500 m. It fired only perforating projectiles. The gun had a full traverse of 360° and an elevation of 45° and a depression of 10°. The breech-block of M6 was semi-automatic.

Une version armée du canon de 75 mm fut également testée pour le Tank Destroyer Command, le T19E1 75 mm Gun Motor Carriage. Le canon de 75 était monté dans une nouvelle tourelle ouverte au dessus. Chevrolet travailla sur le prototype finalement baptisé T66 75 mm GMC.

Fin 1942, les trois modèles furent examinés par l' Armor Board. Cependant, leur mise en production était compromise. En effet le canon de 37 mm était à cette époque jugé obsolète. Le canon de 57 mm fut également pressenti mais monter sur des voitures blindées, des armes de plus en plus puissante était un chemin impraticable car cela aurait nécessité la construction de véhicule de plus en plus imposants et lourds au détriment de la principale qualité d' un véhicule de reconnaissance, la vitesse. Le rôle des véhicules à roues était avant tout d' effectuer des missions de reconnaissance en profondeur rapides et non d' engager le combat. Le développement des trois modèles fut donc annulé fin 1942.
