VK.6501(H) Heavy Tank

Après le développement des chars DWI et DWII et en même temps que celui du VK 3001(H), Henschel travailla sur un char lourd de la classe des 65 tonnes, le Schwere Wagen (Sturmwagen) VK 6501(H). Il s' agissait d' une version alourdie du Panzer IV. Comme pour le DW, Krupp fut chargé de développer la tourelle et d' assurer la production de masse. Trois armement différent furent pris en compte: le 75 mm KwK L/24, le 75 mm KwK L/40 et le 105 mm KwK L/20. En juin 1939, le design fut accepté et en mars 1940, il fut décidé d' utiliser les tourelles du DW après modifications. En avril 1940, Krupp réalisa une maquette en bois et reçut l' ordre de produire le modèle pilote. L' armement. de la tourelle principale était constitué du 75 mm KwK 37 L/24 et d' une 7.62 mm MG 34 coaxiale alors qu' un petite tourelle montée sur la caisse à l' avant était équipée d' une 7.62 mm MG 34 (certaines sources font mention de 2 tourelles auxiliaires). Le VK 6501(H) était protégé par un blindage frontal de 80 mm alors que les modèles de production devaient être protégés par un blindage frontal de 100 mm. La suspension comprenait 10 galets entrelacés et 3 rouleaux porteurs. Les chenilles étaient larges de 800 mm. La mobilité d' un tel mastodonte était plutôt limité, en effet il ne pouvait guère dépasser les 25 km/h. Fait surprenant, pour les transports, le VK 6501(H) était démontable en trois parties (Compartiment du pilote et de la transmission - Compartiment de combat - Compartiment moteur). Un camion lourd, le Faun L900D/567 6x4 équipé de grues Demag LK 5S fut spécialement développé pour cet tâche mais ne fut cependant jamais produit.

It acted of a weighed down version of Panzer IV. As for the DW, Krupp was charged to develop the turret and to ensure the mass production. Three different armament were taken into account: the 75 mm KwK L/24, the 75 mm KwK L/40 and the 105 mm KwK L/20. In June 1939, the design was accepted and in March 1940, it was decided to use the turrets of the DW after modifications. In April 1940, Krupp produced a model out of wooden and accepted the order to produce the pilot model. The armament of the principal turret was consisted of the 75 mm KwK 37 L/24 and one 7.62 mm MG 34 coaxial whereas a small turret assembled in the front of the hull was equipped with one 7.62 mm MG 34 (certain sources make mention of 2 auxiliary turrets). The VK 6501(H) was protected by a frontal shielding of 80 mm whereas the models of production were to be protected by a frontal shielding of 100 mm. The suspension included 10 interlaced road wheels and 3 return rollers. The tracks were 800 mm broad. The mobility of such a mastodon was rather limited, indeed it could hardly exceed the 25 km/h. Fact surprising, for transport, the VK 6501(H) was dismountable in three parts (Compartment of the pilot and the transmission - Compartment of combat - Engine Compartment). A heavy truck, Faun L900D/567 6x4 equipped with cranes DEMAG LK 5S was especially developed for this task but was however never produced.

Le 1er septembre 1939, Henschel et Krupp reçurent l' ordre de débuter la production de l'O-Serie (pré-série). Vers la moitié de 1940, un prototype en acier doux était en construction mais le programme en entier fut supprimé en octobre 1940. Cependant, à la mi 1941, deux prototypes sans tourelles furent finalisés, mais aucune tourelle ne fut jamais montée dessus. En 1942, les deux prototypes furent détruits.

September 1, 1939, Henschel and Krupp accepted the order to begin the production from the O-Series (preproduction). Towards half of 1940, a mild steel prototype was in construction but the program in entirety was removed in October 1940. However, at mid the 1941, two prototypes without turrets were finalized, but no turret was never assembled above. In 1942, the two prototypes were destroyed.
