Sturmgeschütz IV Assault Gun

Durant l'automne 1943 le bombardement de masse des usines " Alkett " en Allemagne stoppa net la fabrication des canons d'assaut StuG III(40). Le 6 décembre, Hitler ordonna que la superstructure du StuG III soit adaptée au châssis du Pz.Kpfw IV Ausf.G/H. Il s'agissait en fait d'une solution intérimaire en attendant la pleine production du Jagdpanzer IV. Krupp fut invité en décembre 43 de développer ce nouveau véhicule qui fut baptisé "Sturmgeschütz IV" (SdKfz 163/167) . Très vite un prototype fut réalisé et accepté pour la production, qui débuta le même mois pour se terminé en mars 1945 avec un total de 1139 exemplaires produits (par Krupp-Gurson).

During the autumn 1943 the bombardment of mass of the factories "Alkett" in Germany strongly disturbed the manufacture of the StuG III(40) assault guns. December 6, Hitler ordered that the superstructure of StuG III is adapted to the chassis of Pz.Kpfw IV Ausf.G/H. It was acted in fact of a temporary solution while waiting for the full production of Jagdpanzer IV. Krupp was invited in December 43 to develop this new vehicle which was baptized "Sturmgeschütz IV" (SdKfz 163/167). Very quickly a prototype was constructed and accepted for the production, which began the same month for finished in March 1945 with a total from 1139 produced specimens (by Krupp-Gurson).

Le StuG IV était armé du 75 mm StuK 40 L/48 (sensiblement la même arme que le Pak 39 L/48 du Jagdpanzer IV) montée sur une superstructure avant complètement close et trapue qui donnait au char une silhouette très basse (très difficile à apercevoir) . Le StuG IV possédait un blindage frontale de 80 mm. Le poste du pilote fut modifié afin d'avoir une trappe d'accès et deux périscopes. Certains modèles virent leur blindage augmenté par des chapes de béton à l'avant de la superstructure. Dès février 1944 le bouclier en groin de cochon "Saukopf" deviendra standard. Durant l'été 1944, la mitrailleuse actionnée par un membre d'équipage depuis le toit du StuG IV sera remplacée par une mitrailleuse contrôlée à distance (ne nécessitant plus que le mitrailleur s'expose).

StuG IV was armed with the 75 mm StuK 40 L/48 (appreciably the same weapon as Pak 39 L/48 of Jagdpanzer IV) mounted on a fully closed front squat superstructure which gave to the tank a very low silhouette (very difficult to see). StuG IV had a shielding frontal of 80 mm. The post of the pilot was modified in order to have a access hatch and two periscopes. Certain models had their shielding increased by concrete covers in front of the superstructure. As of February 1944 the shield out of face mask of pig "Saukopf" will become standard. During the summer 1944, the machine-gun actuated by a member of crew since the roof of StuG IV will be replaced by a machine-gun contred from the interior (not requiring more that the machine gunner exposes himself).

Les StuG IVs servirent sur tous les fronts surtout comme chasseur de chars (et plus tellement comme canon d'assaut). Comme précité, le StuG IV avec sa basse silhouette était une cible très difficile et un adversaire redoutable. Ces chars bénéficiaient d'une excellente réputation et leurs équipages étaient considérés comme une élite et bénéficiaient même d'uniformes spéciaux (gris campagne, version panzer). Les StuG III/IV étaient responsables de la mise à mort d'environ 20000 chars ennemis au printemps 1944!

StuG IV was useful on all fronts especially like tank destroyer (and so much like assault gun). Like above mentioned, StuG IV with its low silhouette was a very difficult target and a frightening adversary. These tanks profited from an excellent reputation and their crews were regarded as an elite and profited even from special uniforms (field gray, version panzer). StuG III/IV were responsible for the destroy of approximately 20000 enemy tanks in spring 1944!

Des essais ont été également effectués sur Stug IV armé d'un 75 mm L/70 rigide mais le concept ne connu guère de succès. En novembre de 1944, Krupp proposa de modifier le Stug III/IV avec le 88 mm Pak 43/3 L/71 mais le projet n'a jamais atteint l'étape du prototype.

Tests were also carried out on Stug IV armed with one 75 mm rigid L/70 but the concept known hardly success. In November of 1944, Krupp proposed to modify Stug III/IV with the 88 mm Pak 43/3 L/71 but the project never reached the stage of the prototype.
