Barcelona, November 1938. From September 1938, twelve
I-16s from the last two consignments were fitted in Spain
with some American Wright Cyclone engines. Oxygen equipment,
four ShKas machine guns, a reflex sight, some armouring
for the pilot, or twin exhaust stacks and a chin air intake
for the Wright Cyclone engine were among these modifications. |
Construcciones Aeronauticas Sociedad Anonima (CASA),
late 1938. Spanish production of the Polikarpov
I-16 started during the summer of 1938 at the Servicio
de Aviacion y Fabricacion (SAF-15) factory at Alicante.
Initially it was planned to build 100 'Super Moscas'
under licence, but this figure was never achieved.
Only 14 machines were ever completed before the
fall of Catalonia to Nationalist hands brought production
at the Hispano-Suiza plant to a halt on 10 February
1939. |
