In middle 1938 TK-1 turbochargers first time were mounted on fighter aircraft. It was first high-altitude fighter in Soviet Union.

Later the I-16TK was reengined with M-62 and the tests continued. With new engine speed exceeded 500 km/h; some sources specify even 520 km/h at 10 000 m altitude.
In 1939 it was considered that new, more advanced and specialized aircraft would be used for high altitudes.
