In 1937, the Swedish Landsverk firm gained with the light tank L-60 a competition with German Pz.Kpfw I and local V-4 (an amphibious tank manufactured by Manfred Weiss). The Swedish tank was shown quite higher than both others and it was accepted for the production. Some modifications were required by l' Hungarian army (steering, transmission, vision, ventilation and suspension) , however the only true change was badoption of the gun of 20 mm 36M anti-tank Solothurn as principal armament, assisted by a coaxial machine-gun of 8 mm 34/37 AM. Production under licence of the tank renamed 38M Toldi I (Hungarian hero the knight Miklos Toldi) was entrusted to firms MÁVAG and Ganz. A first batch of 40 tanks was ordered by the Ministry for Defense in 1939. The total production of Toldi I was of 80 specimens (1940-1941). It should be noted that of many parts were produced in Germany and Sweden. However with the next models the production will be completely Hungarian. .
38M
Toldi I First model produced to 80 specimens between 1940 and 1941, armed with a gun of 20 mm 36M Solothurn and a R-5 radio (antenna arch).
41M
Toldi II Second model produced to 110 specimens between 1941 and 1942, armed with a gun of 20 mm 36M Solothurn and a R-5/a radio (antenna with right bit).
42M
Toldi IIa Because of the painful experiment of fire in Russia, it was decided that the gun of 20 mm was to be replaced by a more powerful weapon. In 1943,80 Toldi II were rearmed with a gun of 40 mm 37/42M and equipped with a better shielding. These tanks were renamed Toldi IIa.
43M
Toldi III Version improved of Toldi IIa produced only to 12 specimens in 1944. It was propelled by a new engine Ganz VIII VGT 107. The shielding is still improved. .
The total production of Toldi very models confused did not exceed the 202 specimens.
Into March 1944,9 tanks Toldi I were transformed into medical vehicles. These vehicles which preserved their capacity of combat carried however less ammunition. In February 1944, the Ganz firm converted Toldi 1 into tank destroyer, armed with a gun of 75 mm but the project remained without continuation.
