M4 Sherman Medium Tank

Models: M4A1(76)W Sherman (Sherman IIA) & M4A1(76)W HVSS Sherman (Sherman IIAY)

Le M4A1(76)W Sherman comme son nom l' indique est un Sherman M4A1 à coque supérieure moulée, équipé d' un canon de 76 mm sur tourelle T23 et d' armoires à munitions humides (W). Les Britanniques le dénommèrent Sherman IIA. Ce modèle était basé sur le M4A1 de fin de production avec les trappes d' accès des pilotes entièrement sur le toit.

De par l' emploi d' armoiresà munitions humides et d' une tourelle mieux blindée, ce modèle ne possédait pas d' appliques de blindage supplémentaires. La tourelle T23 provient du prototype de char moyen T23 qui ne fut jamais standardisé. Avec quelques améliorations, la tourelle fut adoptée pour les Shermans(76). Cette tourelle possédait un arrière plus allongé pour stocker des munitions de 76 mm dans la tourelle et un large bouclier de canon. Sur le toit la trappe du commandant fut déplacée vers la gauche et remplaça la trappe ovale du chargeur, et fut remplacée à sa position initiale par une coupole de commandant à épiscopes fixes.

From the use of wet ammunition storages and a better armoured turret, this model did not have additional shielding plates. The T23 turret comes from the prototype of medium tank T23 which was never standardized. With some improvements, the turret was adopted for Shermans(76). This turret had a back more lengthened to store ammunition of 76 mm in the turret and a broad shield of gun. On the roof the trap door of the commander was moved towards the left and replaced the oval trap door of the loader and was replaced in its initial position by a cupola of commander with fixed episcopes. On the last models, the well of turret was removed.

Le M4A1(76)W fut également équipé de la suspension horizontale (HVSS) équipée de chenilles plus larges, permettant une pression au sol significativement inférieure aux modèles standards. Ces modèles furent baptisés par les Britanniques Shermans IIAY et par les Américains M4A1E8(76)W HVSS ou "Easy Eight".

The M4A1(76)W was also equipped with the horizontal suspension (HVSS) equipped with broader tracks allowing a pressure on the ground significantly lower than the standard models. These models were baptized by the British Shermans IIAY and the Americans M4A1E8(76)W HVSS or "Easy Eight".
